Ever since my debut novel, “It Can’t Be You” was published in November 2010, I have been closely following how it has fared on Flipkart, a very popular online book chain in India. Titles are listed under different categories and ICBY finds itself listed under “Suspense & Thrillers.”I am glad to see that 14 months after its release, ICBY ranks 456 out of 45,174 titles listed under this category. I have always admired Robert Ludlum, so you can’t blame me for being thrilled to see my book sharing the same space as several of his!

No. 454 on this list is Ludlum’s “The Bourne Identity”, followed by ” The Parsifal Mosaic” at 455. At 457 is ” The Winner” by another author I have always admired, David Baldacci.

Yes, I am thrilled!

Flipkart lists all the titles it stocks under various categories. In the “Suspense and Thrillers” category, currently as many as 44,978 titles are listed. I am happy to say that “It Can’t Be You” my debut novel (Cedar, November 2010) ranks 354.

Suspense & Thrillers

It looks like the popular Flipkart has merged “Suspense” and “Thrillers” into one new category recently. “It Can’t Be You” used to figure in the “Suspense” category. I now find that it ranks 400 within a larger merged new category called “Suspense & Thrillers” which has 42,570 titles.

ICBY Is One Year Old!

November 29 filled me with nostalgia. Not for times long gone by but for a day only a year ago, which happened to be one of the happiest in my life. On November 29, 2010, at Crossword, Bangalore, my debut novel, a psychological thriller “It Can’t Be You” was launched by Subroto Bagchi, Co-Founder and Gardener of MindTree.I vividly remember the excitement. Would people turn up for the launch? Would my book and I make a good impression in our first formal presentation to the world? Would people go away with a positive view of the book, and I assume, the author too?

That evening went off exceedingly well. The book launch was a great success. Sudeep Nayak captured snippets of the proceedings and put it up on YouTube.

For me, a dream had come true. I was now a “published author”. I was on my way to a new career. I had no idea what the future would have in store, or how the book would be received. I did have confidence that things would go off well.

Today, as I look back to that day, I have a sense of satisfaction. “It Can’t Be You” has been very well received. One year after its launch, it ranks 193 out of 20,114 titles listed in the “Suspense” category of Flipkart.

It currently ranks 143 out of 19,668 titles in this category. It is now available with a 10 % discount. My debut novel, “It Can’t Be You” (Cedar, November 2010), a psychological thriller, was recently reviewed by Life Wordsmith. I was very happy to see that the effort to develop the characters in my debut novel was appreciated.

I have attempted to delve deep into the minds of my characters. I have sought to describe people and events in the way I think they would have seen them. I was very satisfied to read the reviewer’s comments at the end of the review : “But it’s Belli that stayed with me. I must confess I am most intrigued by him and almost attracted to him for the sheer force of his personality. If there is a modern Dr Jekyll and Hyde, it’s him.”
